Ministry of Finance
The Japanese government sold off their gold holdings that had numismatic value in a series of auction from 2005 to 2008.
The gold coins included 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 Yen of both old and new type.
The coins were struck from 1870 to 1930 and combined 32,683 gold coins was sold.
The coins were placed in a red rigid holder, in very much the same way GSA did for their Morgan dollar hoard back in the 1970s.
Each coin was given a serial number, that started with the highest denomination of old type, for example a 20 Yen 1870 would be serial number 00001, a 10 Yen old 1871 would be 00099, a 5 Yen 1872 would be 03950 and so forth.
This helps keeping an eye on the population of each type/date out there.
Many of these coins have been taken out of their original red rigid holder, so understanding the population with “intact” provenance on each coin would be hard to follow. One can frequent see Japanese gold coins in white NGC holders labelled “Ministry of Finance”, those would come from this hoard. However, NGC also provided grading inside their original holders to preserve their unique pedigree. For more information regarding this: ngccoin.com/coin-grading/holders/japan-ministry-of-finance/
