    HOPE MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY
    The Hope Mutual Fire Insurance Company of St. Louis was created by a Missouri General Assembly Filing on February 17, 1857. Their shield-shaped fire mark was made of zinc, with an anchor in its center. The mark had
    a raised rim and raised lettering that read “HOPE MUTUAL, St Louis”. In 1901, Hope Mutual ceased doing business when it was purchased by the National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut.
    This fire
    mark is of metal (non-ferrous) construction, measuring approximately 8.5" X 9.5" and was cast by
    Heritage
    Metalcraft
    . It is red in color with gold lettering and a gold anchor. The mark is
    in very good condition with only minor nicks/chips/paint loss, which adds to
    its vintage look and feel. This mark is one of the ones that is not regularly seen up for sale.
    This would make an excellent addition for any collector of firefighting or insurance memorabilia, an agent/broker, or a insurance company employee/retiree.
    American insurance company’s fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not suffer greatly if the building was destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
