無題ドキュメントA Fine Early Blue And White Moulded Circular Porcelain Dish With
Tōjin
Figures
Arita ware (
Aï-Kutani
), Edo, c.1655-1670
very fine sharply potted non-biscuit
namagaké
white porcelain of circular form with a pie-crust rim dressed in iron-brown
tétsu-yu
glaze, the interior painted in very fine underglaze cobalt wash in two contrast tones with a central double circular medallion depicting a secret romantic scene, two
tōjin
figures dressed in traditional loose robe, the gentleman holding a sheltering umbrella over his shoulder under a large pine with four clumps of needles and gnarled trunk, sprays of banana plant on the foreground, the cavetto finely moulded in relief with cloud friezes among five shaped plain panels, the reverse typically plain, a large
Kaku Fuku
seal mark within a square to the base set with three spar marks within a cobalt circle, some kiln-grit adhering to the edge of the footring (as expected), covered with a pale blue tinged glaze in darker hues where thick, some manufacturing imperfections to the glaze, partly soiled
The blue and white Arita non-biscuit porcelain dish is thought to have been manufactured either in the Nangawara or Chōkichidani kiln some time between the Méiréki (1655-1658) and Kanbun periods (1661-1673) for the domestic market. The decoration of the current lot, unarguably, derives from those of Jingdezhen
Kosometsuke
porcelain dishes that were manufactured in the Chongzhen period (1628-1644) for the Japanese market. See the Peony Pavilion Collection Catalogue, Christie's, London, 1989 for Jingdezhen dishes with a romantic scene with two figures. An almost identical yet slightly later version with two
tōjin
figures dish with no mark to the base is illustrated in
Aï-Kutani to Aï-Kakiémon
by S. Yamashita, 1983, pl.97, p.105. Compare the current lot with a different version in the Shibata Collection, no.2-205, which dates to 1655 and 1660s. Another later dish with two
tōjin
figures in the same collection, no.2-272, which dates to 1660 and 1680.
Approximate measurements
20.2 cm (8.95 in) maximum cross diameter
Condition
Some old chips to the edge of the iron-brown glazed liprim and one to the footring unless otherwise the dish is in good antique condition with no further chips, cracks and restoration. Some manufacturing imperfections to the glaze. Some minor old wear to the glaze in general use.

Terms of Business
Placing your bid on any lots is assumed to have fully acknowledged the Terms of Business laid out below
BIDDING
I am a professional antique dealer based in Japan and have sold many genuine works of art here and exported worldwide since 2002. I have also offered much fine items on my website since 2010 (currently under construction) and my SNS sites including Instagram on a private basis. All lots offered for sale by the seller "
at-asian-art
" are antiques and works of art, which are unconditionally guaranteed to be genuine as described. The dimensions of each lot stated in the descriptive information are approximate. Please place your bid(s) very carefully, as bid(s) retraction cannot be accepted under any circumstances, which may lead you to be added to the seller's Block Bidder List.
Due to lighting and shooting conditions, some colour variation and brightness in digital images may vary depending on settings and performance of your computer or mobile. Extra images on each lot will be provided upon request.
Should any purchased lot is found not as described, a full refund is made to the buyer unconditionally providing that the buyer contact the seller if a purchased item is not as described and returned to the seller in the same condition as purchased within 30 days. The shipping costs paid and costs of re-shipping will be refunded fully. Any purchased lot cannot be returned for buyer's personal reasons under any circumstances.
COPYRIGHT
Copyright in all images and written material belongs to the seller (

). No part of these written and visual materials may be reproduced without the seller's prior consent. Any report providing copyright breaches to the seller (
at-asian-art
) will be appreciated. Digital images and descriptive information used for all lots will be provided to the buyer upon request.
ENQUIRIES
Enquiries regarding lots are welcome, which are normally responded in one business day. Any enquiry irrelevant to sales conducted by the seller are not responded under any circumstances. No personal or sensitive information should be included in any enquiry, as relevant communications may be posted to eBay so as to be viewed and shared by other members.
PAYMENT
An invoice including the price of lot(s) plus international shipping with insurance will be e-mailed to the buyer within a day upon close of auction. No extra charges apart from insurance based on the winning bid is added to the invoice.
Payment over
0 USD via BWT (IBAN: 0017 SAIBJPJT)
and
IPMO
in US dollar
are also accepted by prior arrangement.
eCheque via PayPal
, a type of bank payment is also accepted for those who do not possess a debit or credit card as a backup payment source to your PayPal accounts. Payment via
PayPal eCheque
usually takes between three and ten business days to process. Bank processing times vary from bank to bank and country to country. Buyers intending to make payment via PayPal are required to comply with the
User Agreement For PayPal Service
.
Payment is due within a week under normal circumstances unless otherwise agreed with the seller in advanc
e.
Non-Paying Bidder Form
will be filed to eBay automatically when payment is not received within the aforementioned period. A combined shipment can be arranged for multiple purchases so as to save international shipping.
SHIPPING
All goods are shipped worldwide by
EMS
(
International Postal Express Mail Service
offered by postal-administration members of the Universal Postal Union
) or private couriers in one business day (JST: Japan standard time) on receipt of payment or cleared funds in full. All purchased lots with the exception of printed goods cannot be shipped by any other shipping methods with no tracking information for security reasons and in compliance with eBay-PayPal policies. Shipping options are only available for "printed goods", which are clearly quoted below the descriptive information on each lot. All purchased lots are required to be shipped to the payer's address confirmed by PayPal, should payment is made by this on-line intermediary firm. Lots can also be handed over to a winning bidder in person domestically. Delivery time depends on the speed of clearance of goods at Customs, which substantially varies from country to country.
Estimated international shipping based on the total packed weight and destination zones are quoted just below the descriptive information on each item. International shipping quoted is what a shipper charges to the seller in Japan. The actual total EMS postage or private courier charges in JPY and weight of a shipment (grammes) are filled in on a shipment package.
Under the current eBay regulation, international shipping is now required to be quoted in selling goods. Since all goods are despatched from Japan where shipping is obviously charged to the seller in JPY, the latest PayPal's official exchange rates when an item is listed to eBay auction must unavoidably be adopted, although the exchange rate adopted may change by the time when an invoice will have been e-mailed to the successful bidder(s). Estimated international shipping in US dollar is based on conversion from JPY to US dollar with the latest exchange rate quoted on the PayPal website and rounded to the nearest US dollar, as many overseas buyers choose PayPal as the principal method of method. Combined shipment can be arranged for multiple purchases to minimise international shipping providing that all goods are packed in one available box.
INSURANCE
Insurance will be based on the total value of a single shipment. A single shipment valued below
20,000 JPY
(based on the latest foreign currency exchange rate) is included in the EMS shipping quoted. Extra rates are applied to overseas shipping via private
couriers.
Insurance for an EMS shipment valued above this threshold will be added to an invoice as seller's charges
.
IMPORTATION OF MERCHANDISE
Unless otherwise merchandise is shipped domestically, Custom duties based on the declared Customs value of merchandise may be payable and these extra charges are not included in the total price in an invoice. Custom duties rates vary from country to country and all prospective buyers are advised to know what import duties will be with the Customs office of the country to which merchandise is imported.
We cannot be held liable for these charges under any circumstances, as they are beyond our control
. No import duties are payable for "antiques" in USA.
All lots sold by the seller are subject to laws governing exports from Japan.
A single shipment valued above 200,000 JPY
requires an
Export Permit
at Customs in Japan. All necessary permits in exporting goods from Japan are undertaken for purchasers.
